Metals engineering is often overlooked during component design. This leads to inappropriate re-use of alloys used in previous products, selecting alloys based on a subset of requirements, and selecting alloys that are difficult to fabricate into a component. As a result, designs are sub-optimum – higher costs than necessary, difficult to fabricate components, and product testing failures.
The main reason metals engineering is overlooked during component design is lack of knowledge about the science of metals and how metals can be engineered.
