Phases and Phase Transformations
Phases are physically distinct materials that exist within an alloy, and different phases have different properties. A phase is a mixture of the different elements in the alloy or is a compound of the different elements that make up the alloy. The phases present within a metal affect its properties.
This lesson explains about the factors that influence the phases present within a metal and their relative amounts, size, and shape. The lesson also explains about phase transformations, which involve the formation of one or more phases from another phase.
The concepts taught are important for understanding the microscopic structures that influence metal properties and how these structures can be modified.
