Alloys and Alloy Designations
This lesson teaches about the alloys and alloy designations of plain carbon and low alloy carbon steels. Carbon steels are the most widely used family of alloys. There are two broad categories of carbon steel alloys: plain carbon and low-alloy carbon steel. The differences between the two categories of alloys is the use of alloying elements in low-alloy steel that are not used in plain carbon steels. However, even though there are differences in composition, the microstructures formed are similar, as are the effects of carbon concentration and microstructure on steel properties.
