If your products use precipitation strengthening alloys (also called precipitation hardening alloys), you need to understand the metallurgical and heat treating factors that affect alloy strength and hardness and how heat treating should be controlled to obtain the desired mechanical properties.

What you’ll learn about precipitation strengthening

The following aspects of precipitation strengthening are taught in this course:

  • How precipitation strengthens an alloy.
  • Heat treating process steps for precipitation strengthening an alloy and the microstructure changes that occur during each step.
  • The microstructure changes that occur during precipitation strengthening heat treating
  • The effects of heat treating process conditions on alloy microstructure and strength
  • Heat treating process parameters and their effects on alloy microstructure and strength.

Course contentprecipitation strengthening

The course takes about 3 hours to complete and consists of 5 modules and a final exam.  Each module is 20-30 minutes long.  Also, quizzes and problems give you opportunities to apply the concepts taught.  The module titles are:

  • Module 1: Introduction
  • Module 2: Phase diagrams
  • Module 3: Precipitation strengthening
  • Module 4: Heat treatment details
  • Module 5: Course review

Course certificate

Upon successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate for 2 credit hours (0.2 CEU’s).
