This course teaches the metallurgy details for steel through hardening heat treating - quench and temper, martempering, and austempering.

What you will learn

The following aspects of steel through hardening are taught in this course:

  • Quenching and tempering, martempering, and austempering heat treating process conditions.
  • Effects of steel composition and heat treating temperature and cooling rate on through hardened steel microstructure, strength, and hardness
  • Common through hardening problems and how to avoid them.
  • Effects of tempering temperature and time on steel microstructure, strength, and hardness.
  • Effects of steel composition on hardenability and how to read a hardenability curve.

Course content

The modules and the content are:

  1. Introduction. Purpose of steel through hardening.
  2. Quench and Temper. Quench and temper heat treating. Significant process parameters and their effects on steel microstructure and properties.
  3. Steel Hardenability. Hardenability definition, factors that influence hardenability, how hardenability is measured, hardenability curves, effect of hardenability on the microstructure of quench and tempered steel.
  4. Hardness Profile. Hardness profile definition. Factors that influence the hardness profile for a quench and tempered steel component.
  5. Time-Temperature-Transformation Diagrams. The information provided by a time-temperature-transformation diagram.
  6. Quenching Problems. Four common problems associated with quenching and their causes. How to reduce residual stress, shape distortion, and cracking in quenched components.
  7. Martempering and Austempering. Martempering and austempering processes. Microstructure and property changes that occur during martempering and austempering.
  8. Course Review.
  9. Final exam. 70% required to pass the course and receive a certificate of completion.

Quizzes and problems give opportunities to apply the steel through hardening concepts taught. The course takes about three hours to complete.

You will have 4 months access to this course.

Prerequisites

Learners should be familiar with the concepts covered in our Steel Metallurgy course. This includes

    • Basics of reading iron-carbon phase diagram
    • Phases that form in steel during heating and cooling
    • Effects of cooling rate on phase transformations and steel microstructure formed.

Course certificate

A certificate for 3 training hour (0.3 CEUs) will be awarded after completing all course modules and successfully completing a final exam.
