Learn the metallurgical details about three steel through hardening heat treatments, including

The course focus is on carbon and low-alloy steels, though many of the concepts also apply to tool steels. The course is geared to non-metallurgists and covers practical concepts that apply to real-world situations.

What you will learn

The following aspects of steel through hardening are taught in this course:

  • Quenching and tempering, martempering, and austempering through hardening process conditions.
  • Effects of steel composition and heat treating temperature and cooling rate on through hardened steel microstructure, strength, and hardness
  • Common through hardening problems and how to avoid them.
  • Effects of tempering temperature and time on steel microstructure, strength, and hardness.
  • Effects of steel composition on hardenability and how to read a hardenability curve.

Course content

The course takes about 2 hours to complete and consists of 2 modules and a final exam.  Also, quizzes and problems give you opportunities to apply the concepts taught.

The module titles are:

  • Module 1: Quenching and tempering
  • Module 2: Martempering and austempering

You will have 4 months access to complete this course.

Prerequisites

Learners should be familiar with the concepts covered in our Steel Metallurgy course. This includes

    • Basics of reading iron-carbon phase diagram
    • Phases that form in steel during heating and cooling
    • Effects of cooling rate on phase transformations and steel microstructure formed.

Course certificate

A certificate for 2 training hour (0.2 CEUs) will be awarded after completing all course modules and successfully completing a final exam.
