Steel Case Hardening - Industrial Metallurgists

Steel Case Hardening

Getting the strength and hardness you need in case hardened steel components requires knowledge of the effects of alloy composition and heat treating on steel properties.  With knowledge of the metallurgy of steel case hardening you’ll be better able to

  • Select the most appropriate alloy and heat treating process for your application
  • Evaluate suppliers
  • Develop manufacturing processes
  • Solve quality problems

If your products use case hardened steel components, a good understanding of the metallurgy of steel case hardening is critical for being more productive and profitable.

What you will learn about steel case hardening

The following aspects of steel case hardening are taught in this course:

  • Process conditions for carburizing, nitriding, carbonitriding, nitrocarburizing, flame hardening, and induction hardening.
  • Microstructure and property changes that occur during case hardening heat treating processes.
  • Measuring case depth
  • Composition and microstructure requirements of steel for case hardening

Course content

The course takes about one hour to complete and consists of 2 modules and a final exam.  Each module is about 25 minutes long.  Also, quizzes and problems in the modules give you opportunities to apply the concepts taught.

The module titles are:

  • Module 1: Carburizing, carbonitriding, nitriding, nitrocarburizing
  • Module 2: Flame hardening and induction hardening

Discounts

We offer group discounts and discounted all-access passes.

Course certificate

Upon successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate for 1 credit hour (0.1 CEU's).
