Design for Reliability

Design for Reliability

Learn how to ensure your products' longevity and prevent costly failures

The materials in components can degrade due to exposure to use conditions - steel screws corrode when exposed to water, some plastics become brittle when exposed to sunlight, and coatings on surfaces can wear away.

Components stop functioning when their materials degrade too much, which is a problem if it leads to loss of product performance before the end of a product’s expected life. Identifying the conditions to which materials are exposed and selecting materials that can withstand the exposure is critical for designing products that have good reliability.

Attend our upcoming Design for Reliability course and learn how to identify the conditions that cause degradation of materials and lead to component failure. You’ll also learn how the effects of stressors can be evaluated without having to build the entire product.

  • Date:  Thursday, July 6
  • Time: 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. central time
  • Instructor: Michael Pfeifer, Ph.D., P.E.
  • Will be recorded for future viewing

The presentation will last about 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes for attendee questions. You will receive a webinar slide document and have 14 days access to the recording.

What you will learn

  • Different types of stressors that cause materials degradation
  • Material degradation mechanisms
  • Five sources of stressors (identifying stressors)
  • How to evaluate materials degradation with simple test samples (evaluating effects of stressors)

Who should attend

Engineers interested in designing products that don't have problems. This course is part of our series on leveraging materials engineering to design and produce successful products and solve metals related problems.
