Hi and welcome to my website! michael-pfeifer2

For over 25 years I’ve worked as a metallurgical and materials science engineer on projects related to product design, manufacturing, and root cause analysis. This includes:

  • Materials selection for new designs, cost reduction, and quality improvement
  • Research and development
  • Supplier evaluation
  • Manufacturing process development
  • Failure analysis

This experience has given me broad experience with the entire product cycle, start to finish, and the whole process is exciting. It’s fun to find the right material that optimizes performance, reliability, and cost. And it’s rewarding to get the information someone needs to fix a quality problem or determine whether a supplier is good or will just cause headaches.

Many companies don’t have a metallurgical engineer on staff, but need occasional help with their metals.  I’m available to help with small and large projects, and even for a 15-minute discussion. I’ll work with you and others on your team to get the information you need to make the best decision or solve a problem.

I received a B.S. and M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University.

After graduating I worked 13 years at Motorola as a manufacturing engineer in an integrated circuit factory and as a design/quality/cost reduction engineer for automotive electronics. At Motorola I learned and applied the engineering techniques required to design and manufacture great products.

I also wrote a book – Materials Enabled Designs: The Materials Engineering Perspective to Product Design and BookCoverManufacturing. It teaches the considerations required to

  • Select materials that will optimize product performance, reliability, and cost.
  • Control the properties of materials so that components and joints always meet specifications

Good luck with your materials,
