Abstract

Studies experimentally the effects of elastic stress on the Ni-V phase diagram in the neighborhood of the Ni-V→Ni3V congruent point. From the results it was concluded that elastic stress has a significant effect on phase equilibrium in the Ni-V system near the congruent point and, for Ni-21.5 at % V, leads to a 6°C depression of the coherent solvus below the incoherent solvus. As the temperature decreases the difference between the equilibrium coherent and incoherent volume fractions decreases. These experimental results are qualitatively, but not quantitatively, consistent with the theoretical predictions. The cause of the quantitative disagreement may be related to the simple model used in the theory for the elastic fields in the particle and matrix phases and/or the limited composition and temperature range over which the theory is valid.
